Favorite assigned book you read in middle or high school?

Postby DanJoshMass » Sun Jun 03, 2012 12:11 am

Hey kids. I'm going to be an English teacher when I grow up. This summer I'm reading and re-reading books that most people were assigned to read in middle school and high school, so I was wondering what was your favorite book from that time? Mine is 1984 because I like dystopian themes and not liking the government. Right now I'm reading The Outsiders, which I've never read even though most people I know read it in middle school. I'm about 3/4 done and I really like it. Sucks that I was never assigned it.

TLDR: What was your favorite book you read in middle or high school?

I didn't have much assigned reading. Lord of the flies was pretty good. I don't remember really enjoying anything else I was assigned.

I have to say I really enjoyed The Great Gatsby. I'm usually really bad about writing books off simply because they're assigned reading, Gatsby was the first book I ever read as an assignment and actually enjoyed it!

Oddly, I liked Gatsby quite a bit, too. That and Count of Monte-Cristo (in french) were the only books I actually cared for in school.

I don't really remember the difference between assigned reading and what I read for fun in high school, haha. I just read everything all the time. EVERYTHING.

I loved 1984, but generally don't like assigned books.

Tip. Don't do what one of my teachers did and photocopy books because you don't have enough copies. It's terrible to read that way. Just get the read deal.

I've never read Gatsby, but I'm reading it for a course next semester. My friend took the same course last semester and loved Gatsby. I'm stoked to read it now!

Props to you, man. That's a good way to be. If there was a thumbs up smily, I'd put it here. I'll give you a Jake instead. ¡jake!

I'm a freshman in high school, so I haven't been assigned that many books. But so far, I liked Lord Of The Flies, and I LOVE LOVE LOVED Fahrenheit 451.

we know you're young hunter and that you just finished your first berenstain bears book, but wait until you start reading serious mature stuff, like where the wild things are.

I want to read that. Because I love the film. And because I am practically Sam Sparks.

We weren't really assigned many books, but my favourites were The Picture of Dorian Gray and To Kill A Mockingbird, although technically I didn't have to read Mockingbird, we were just given a massive list of books and had to pick two.

The movie is great, but it had very, very little in common with the book. Go get the book from your local library. It should take you less than five minutes to read because it's a children's book.

Lulz. That's awesome. Age Of Reptiles is by far the best Showbread album.

My senior english class read The Kite Runner which I found to be a fantastic novel. Not sure if other schools use that book or not but it's definitely a good read! (as is Hosseini's other novel A Thousand Splendid Suns) It's a shame he has yet to write anything else.
