Marijuana Decriminalization

Postby Godzuki » Sun Nov 01, 2009 6:56 pm

Do you support the decriminalization of marijuana?

and for those that don't know what that means:

Illegal can get you in jail for it. This goes on your criminal record.
Decriminalized means you can be fined for it, but it doesn't go on any record.

I support decriminalization. Arresting and processing every little dealer and user costs millions of dollars and clutters up the justice system. on top of that, if you get arrested once it goes onto your permanent record, making it harder to get jobs, travel, etc. You pay for that for life.

Every cop knows how much work it is to arrest someone for smoking weed, so it's often overlooked. I think that if they could just hit someone with a fine they would actually do it more freely

anyway, share your thoughts

In the other thread, I mentioned poli-sci class, which is the reason I support decriminalization. During this discussion, a guy in our class on the side for decriminalization (not on the side for legalizing, which was interesting) admitted to everyone that he got brought to the police station for getting caught with it, and it's not even something he does all the time, it's just an occasional thing. Now he has a criminal record just for having weed. This affects his entire future, and could ruin his chances for a lot of things, just for making one small mistake and carrying weed at the wrong time.

Isn't that the point though? I'm unsure/apathetic about this because people will do these kinds of things regardless.

Yes, but that's something so ridiculous to get a criminal record for. All he did was possess a drug that isn't a criminal offense in plenty of places.

no kidding. when my friends and i got busted for it, my friend was nice enough to claim that all of the stuff was his, which it wasn't.
that night was so traumatizing. it's one thing seeing one of your best friends getting handcuffed and put in the back of a cop car, but i was high at the time. it made everything so much worse. that night will forever be burned into my memory.

and that is the reason i don't smoke anymore. if it was legal, then i would probably do it again, though not often. like drinking. i don't do that often either. the last thing i want to be is an alcoholic, or a pothead. although pot isn't addictive...

pot isn't any worse for you than cigarettes or alcohol, so if it's going to stay illegal, then outlaw the other two plz. not that it really matters, because since when did outlawing anything work?

lol, okay my legitimate post in this topic:

I think that perhaps it should be decriminalized, but it needs to wait for a time when America is more finacially secure (or whatever). Because when it becomes decriminalized, America is going to go freaking weed crazy for a while. Guarantee you that.

there's also proof that marijuana strengthens your immune system, along with a lot of other health benefits.

there's one of those conspiracy theories that the only reason that marijuana is illegal is that if it was legal, it would put pharmaceutical companies out of business, but i don't know if that's true.

I think it should be legalized. If people want to smoke weed that's their choice, just like smoking or drinking or anything else. But I agree the way the economy is now would not be a good time for that.

wut? it would be a perfect time for that! if it was legalized, and regulated, it would help the economy like crazy

Or people would rush out and spend all their money on weed. I guess it could go either way.

if they spend all of their money on weed that only hurts them. it doesn't hurt the economy. in fact, that helps the economy.

It would take time to turn it into an industry, or something profitable for the government.

Meanwhile, like sam said, people would rush out and spend all their money on weed from individual sellers and contribute nothing to the economy.

The economy is just too unstable right now. It MIGHT help the economy, but it might just make things even worse. And imo it would just make things worse. But I'm all for it once the economy is more stable.
