Music For Japan - Discussion

Postby JWat » Mon Mar 21, 2011 12:51 pm

Decided to move conversation here so more people would notice it.
Anybody putting in a song:
I neeeeeeeeed need need to have the uncompressed file; .wav, .aif or .flac

See original thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2053

NightHawk had the idea of putting together a donate-for-download benefit album, with proceeds going to Japan relief. A few people have already expressed interest, but is there anybody else that would like to try to contribute something? We're looking for original songs. Also, does anybody have contact with any other bands and artists that might be willing? (Slaw, looking at you, buddy - it would be awesome if Poms/FIRS or AtDH were interested. Sean and Patrick, would your bands be willing to get in this?)

But we need lots of ideas. Should I just revamp the Bandcamp site to include this (???.rawrockmilitia.com)? What kinds of requirements have to be met (swearing/no swearing, any genre restrictions?, deadline, content/does-it-have-to-be-Japan-relief-oriented?, etc.)? Any other ideas?
Also, any of you design kids want to create some art for this?

Biggest thing is, who does the money (if any is made) go to? Any ideas for what charity/benefit this gets plugged into?

I can't help with very much of that. However, the Red Cross and Save the Children are both good options. Sites like Charity Navigator can also help give you a quick look at any charity your interested in.

There's also a page for information about giving to Japan.

Yeah. I do.

I don't own a harp and I don't have access to the harp at school anymore. I don't have a way to record anything nor do I know someone who does. And finally, I don't know what you'd want anyway. Mostly I just don't have anyway to record.

maybe something like this? http://www.billygraham.org/specialsecti ... 2godXVnQ9A
idk. personally, i'd like it to be donated to a charity that would take care of japan's eternal needs as well as help them in their current situation.

mmm.....i don't trust big church organizations like that, but that's just me. i don't have any better ideas, though; i don't really trust any of em.

I don't think there should be any genre restrictions (i'm pretty sure i'd get disqualified if there were) but the songs should have meaningful lyrics (i.e. no "AEnema" or "Wipe Out" covers).

I would add harp to mine, but the harp is at my mom's house and i don't know when i'll see her again.....
I get up in the morning, divide by zero, howl at the moon and eat a bowl of surreal.

love the idea. bandcamp sounds like a good idea. I'd say keep it clean as long as we're doing this as a militia effort.

Well, it's going to be originals anyways, no covers.

(I may be posting this twice, not sure where the first one went)

Could we do something through Compassion for the money? That's where the RRM donations go, right?

As far as music goes, I'll ask some friends if they'd like to do anything; and with the art, I could do something, but I'm super busy with school right now and don't have a lot of time. If you have a specific idea you can tell me I can do it, but I don't have time to put a lot of thought into it right now (as opposed to my Wreck the Halls artwork that was super deep and full of hidden meanings). I'm being a selfish creep, yes.

I do, however, think this is a very good idea.

Is Compassion doing some sort of Japan relief?

Awesome, thanks man, we appreciate it. If anyone shows interest, let me know. And if any of them have ideas or suggestions, let me know or get them to contact me via any of mine or RRM's social thingers.
And that's cool, if you end up finding time and have an idea in mind, please give it a shot. I really don't know enough about this whole thing to have specific things in mind. Any other artists, please also go for it. Or even if you just have creative suggestions or direction, or can offer an outline of a cover that somebody else can tackle at making a full thing.

i tried to find a compassion japan relief when i posted that link, but i couldn't find one. is it okay if i did an instrumental song that is somehow inspired by what took place? writing songs is hard enough for me without trying to think of lyrics.

I have no problem with it. I personally don't think the content of the music/lyrics should have to be related to this whole thing, but that's just me. Anyways, instrumentals are cool. Hard to keep interesting though, so you might want to consider that.

I'm on the side that there shouldn't really be any genre restrictions. Lyrically probably on the cleaner side. I'd say maybe like 3-4 weeks to submit. The reason being is it makes sure people have the time they need to make stuff that isn't rushed, also makes it more reasonable for anyone who might know a bigger band that they may try and get to submit. Also, agreed, it's urgent, at the same time Japan estimates it'll take 5 years to rebuild and month still before things are under relative control, SO it'd be worth takin' the time to make sure it's done right. :pikachu:

Oh, I dunno. Apparently not. That's just the first thing that came to mind, I hadn't looked into it yet.

I agree with 3-4 weeks. having all original songs would be be pretty cool, as long as they don't have to be Japan themed. 50 minutes of japan songs would be pretty boring.

triple postastic.

just told my roommate and he's pretty psyched. he's also an amazing guitar player and an even better drummer. my other roommate is crazy good at keys so I'll tell him later. Also a girl down the hall plays the cello, maybe I can get her in on this too. writing the lyrics is gonna be rough though.

Starting to sound awesome. Bigger the collection the more likely people would wanna buy it. As I said before, I would gladly make a track or two (I has two bands) I know a couple good artists/bands at my school, and POSSIBLY might be able to get The Wedding or The Echoing Green to submit. :pikachu:

getting legit bands to contribute would be amazing, even though I realize it would turn my song into filler 8)

Image

Here's a quick idea for the art (basically just ripping off every other Japan Relief thing out there right now), I'll probably go in and do the text by hand later, and maybe add a brushed looking no music logo and some splattery/dripping looking things, and/or anything else anyone tells me to do.

Had anyone decided on a name for this yet?
